With over 30% protein and around 40% dietary fibre, flax seed flake is a wonderful supplement for optimum bowel and colon health.  It is great for dogs who suffer from constipation or poor digestive health, and can also assist with anal gland issues.

Flax seed flake is very high in dietary fibre, and low in non-fibre carbohydrates. The high insoluble fibre content promotes regular bowel movements and a healthy colon, contributing to your dog's all-round health. Insoluble fibre acts like a sponge and absorbs water, therefore adding a higher moisture content to stools, encouraging normal faecal consistency and reducing constipation.

In addition to protein and dietary fibre, flake is also a fantastic source of phytoestrogens (lignans at 1.6%) and other vitamins and minerals including sodium, calcium and magnesium.

Feeding

We recommend feeding 1g of Flake per 4g of body weight. The Flake can be simply sprinkled over the top of the daily meal like a topper, or fed in chunks as a treat.

We are often asked if the flake needs to be soaked in water prior to feeding.  This is not the case with Flax Seed Flake.  Due to some of the oil being retained in the flake it is not extremely dry, and so does not need to be soaked.  We do however recommend that your dog has water readily available when eating.

Q: What is Flax Seed Flake and what is it good for?

A: After the oil has been cold pressed out of the linseed seed, a flake meal is expelled. Some cold pressing machines expel the meal as a pellet, so you may find flax seed (linseed) pellets in some stores. The Flake is high in protein (approx 33%) and dietary fibre (approx 40%), so is an excellent source of protein with the added benefit of Omega 3 (approx 8%). The Flake can be added to feed to increase the protein and/or dietary fibre content. Many people like to feed the flake to aid muscle growth and development in younger animals, as well as assisting with digestive health.  It’s important to always ensure plenty of drinking water is available too.

Q: Does the Flax Seed Meal have any oil content?

A: We cold-press the whole seed which means we don't extract every last drop of oil out of the seed through the expellers. Our expellers extract two products; Flax Seed Oil and Flax Seed Flake. The Flax Seed Flake is then milled down to a very fine powder to form the Flax Seed Meal used in many of our powder supplement blends. This means there is a very low oil content, but overall the powders are very shelf stable.
